Bears Win Easily Against Panthers
By Jasmine Desarae
Union City – It was a big game in the Bears’ Den tonight as the Union City Bears battled the Saegertown Panthers for a 74-39 victory. UC fought hard to move their record to 12-3 overall and 7-1 region. They remain in second place in Region 3 behind the Cochranton Cardinals.
The Panthers held the lead once Friday night early in the 1st quarter. They controlled the score by two points – 9-7. All of Saegertown’s points came from Eli Draa who connected with three 3-pointers. Soon, though, the Bears’ offense came alive as they always do. The ball was continuously passed to Bronnan Higley who continued to drive the score up while under the hoop. By the end of the 1st quarter, UC scored nine unanswered points. One of which was a bonus point from Higley.
In quarter two, the Panthers started to get back on the board. Still, UC’s man-to-man defense continued to hold them. The Bears outscored Saegertown 15-13. The game was again a nine-point game 31-22 at halftime.
The Panthers continued to connect with their 3-point shots as the 3rd quarter went underway. At the start of the period, both teams took turns making baskets that kept a ten-point difference. Then, UC started to pull ahead. The Bears added 11 more points to the 44-32 score before Saegertown was able to respond. Miles Parker helped advance the team’s score by burying multiple 3-pointers.
Union City never stopped fighting to pull further ahead. A long pass to Parker brought the score to 64-35. Keegan Hornaman was the next player to make a basket, giving the Bears three points. With a little under four minutes left in the game, Coach Thompson substituted his starters with a younger Bear. The Panthers followed suit, switching their players after their forward Dylan Flinchbaugh went to the free-throw line. This led to the end of the game with Union City overall dominating the court.
Union City will play Saturday, January 26th against Harborcreek for a non-region makeup game. Their next conference game will be in Russell, PA against the Eisenhower Knights. Following there will be a rivalry match against the Cambridge Springs Blue Devils in the Bears’ Den.
