Union City’s Henry and Long Advance to Quarterfinals
HERSHEY — Union City upper-weights Gavin Henry and Matt Long, stayed in contention in the championship bracket at the PIAA Class 2A wrestling championships.
The Class 2A’s preliminary round, first round and consolation first round were completed by Thursday afternoon in the opening session of the three-day tournament at the Giant Center.
The Bears’ seniors each required less than two periods to advance.
Henry, a senior competing at 182 pounds, was up 4-0 when he caught Blairsville’s Garrett Henigin with a cross-face move. He pinned the junior at 2 minutes, 40 seconds.
That upped Henry’s record to 39-3. The Section 1, District 10 and Northwest Region 2A champion drew Palisades senior Adam Marsh (30-3) as his quarterfinal foe Friday. Long’s quarterfinal opponent will be significantly tougher. Mount Union junior Jake Ryan is 37-1 and was bracketed as the favorite to claim the 285 gold medal.
