Bears in Great Form Heading into PIAA District 10 Class 2A Softball Playoffs
By Chris Lash
Right this moment, the playoff bracket is blank. But it won’t take long before we see who the new District 10 2A Champion Union City Lady Bears will be playing. They should be well rested after their short three inning, 15 to nothing shutout win over Wilmington. What has become a great ritual in Union City, the ladies were escorted in and through town by the Union City Fire Department.
We do know the playoffs opening round begins on Monday, June 3rd. Prior to their big win, they were ranked 15th in the State of Pennsylvania in Class 2A. But their also nationally ranked at 2970. Think about that, and think about the thousands and thousands of high schools in America? That is an incredible accomplishment for the Bears.
Union City (18-2) and Wilmington (12-8) both move on to the PIAA first round at sites and times to be determined. “I think the key was we looked to attack and go after that first good pitch and try to split it in two,” said Union City coach Jerry VanZandt. “We showed up and had our ‘A’ game. One of the goals we had all season was to get better as the year went on, and we are not the same team we were in March” VanZandt told the Erie Times News.
Congratulations ladies. You’ve made Union City very proud!
